BECOMING A SYNODAL CHURCH | Walking Together in Communion, Participation & Mission
Today, the leaders of Church of the Good Shepherd, Setapak gathered for our GSC Study Day: “Towards a Synodal and Missionary Church.” Our gathering was more than a time to review plans and activities. It was an invitation to conversion and to ask ourselves what it truly means to become synodal as a parish.
Guided by the Final Document of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission, we reflected on the Church’s call to listen to the Holy Spirit, discern together and take concrete steps to live communion, participation and mission. The Final Document reminds the whole Church that the synodal journey continues through implementation in the life of our local communities.

Inspired by the scripture passage, the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35), our journey invited us to recognise Christ walking among us as we listen, dialogue, pray and discern together. Through Conversation in the Spirit, parish leaders reflected on our experiences of walking together, the barriers that prevent deeper participation, and how formation can be translated into concrete pastoral action.
Becoming synodal calls us towards continuing conversion:
🙏 Conversion of ourselves – deepening our relationship with Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform the way we listen and serve.
🤝 Conversion of our relationships and processes – moving from working in isolation towards listening, participation, shared responsibility, transparency and discernment.
🌏 Conversion of our bonds – looking beyond our familiar circles, building bridges and reaching those at the margins and peripheries.
These themes closely echo the architecture of the Final Document, which calls for conversion in relationships, processes and bonds, all oriented towards mission.

Synodality is therefore not simply another programme for the parish. It is a way of being Church.
As one parish family, may we continue to listen, walk together, serve and bring hope, becoming ever more truly:
A People of Faith, A Church for the World.

May the Holy Spirit teach us to journey together, so that our Communion leads to Participation, and our Participation sends us forth in Mission.
One Church. Many Peoples. A Brighter Tomorrow.
