Compassion Over Celebration: Good Shepherd Church, Catechism Students Bring Christmas Joy to the Elderly
KUALA LUMPUR — Trading a typical year-end party for a profound act of service, the Form 3 catechetical students of Good Shepherd Church Setapak dedicated their final class to embodying the true spirit of Christian charity. In a deeply meaningful gesture, the group chose to forgo their own celebration and instead brought warmth, joy, and companionship to the beloved residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor (LSP) in Kuala Lumpur.

A Morning Rooted in Faith and Fellowship
The visit commenced with a moment of quiet reverence. Students, teachers, and the Sisters united in an opening prayer, grounding the morning’s activities in gratitude and faith, and asking for God’s blessings upon the elderly residents. This simple yet powerful moment set the tone for a day filled with compassion and mutual fellowship.
The atmosphere soon transformed as the program began with a lively dance performance by the students. The hall lit up with the infectious energy of the young performers, drawing immediate smiles and enthusiastic applause from the residents and creating a memorable, joyous start. Following the performance, the students officially ushered in the festive season by presenting thoughtful Christmas gifts for the residents and the Sisters, which included essential care items, festive treats, and daily necessities.
The Melody of Shared Memories
The air soon became thick with the sounds of Christmas carols. As the students sang traditional hymns and joyful songs, the home was filled with festive melody. Residents joined in softly, some mouthing the familiar words, others happily tapping their feet or clapping along. For many, the cherished carols served as a beautiful bridge to rekindled memories of Christmases past.
One of the most moving segments of the day was the sharing and meet-and-greet session. Students took the opportunity to sit, listen, and speak with the residents. The conversations unveiled a rich tapestry of life experiences: from former professionals and those who had studied abroad, to individuals bravely facing illnesses like cancer. While some elderly individuals gently noted they no longer recalled how they came to stay at LSP, others passionately expressed that they chose the home because they felt genuinely cared for and valued. The common thread among them was the palpable comfort and strong community they had found within the walls of the home.
A Lesson in Service and Empathy
After the activities, the Sisters provided the students with a guided tour of the facility, allowing the young visitors to appreciate the thoughtful care structure that supports the residents’ daily lives.
The visit culminated in a warm and festive gathering as the teachers and students sponsored a special lunch for all residents. Alongside the meal, each resident was gifted a handmade Christmas card, crafted with personal messages and heartfelt prayers. The class also presented a generous cash donation to support the home’s vital ongoing needs, a gesture deeply appreciated by the Sisters.
What began as a simple alternative to a year-end party evolved into a profoundly impactful experience. For the Form 3 catechetical students, it was the ultimate lesson in empathy, selfless service, and truly living out the Gospel values they had spent the year learning. For the residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor, it was a day filled with the light of music, new companionship, and the joyful, uplifting spirit of Christmas.
As the students departed, they carried with them the powerful realization that charity is not merely an action but a deep and fulfilling calling. For many, this heartfelt visit became the most enriching and memorable final class they could have ever hoped for.
A Special Note from the Catechism Teachers
Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for allowing your children to be part of this meaningful event. The Sisters and residents of LSP were truly touched by our visit, the thoughtful gifts, and the generous cash donation. Many of them shared that this was the best Christmas present they received this year.
It has been a joy and a privilege to guide your children in their faith journey throughout the year. May they continue to grow in kindness, compassion, and love as they deepen their relationship with God.
Wishing you and your families a blessed Christmas season.
