A Time to Pause: Our Parish Lenten Recollection

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31)

A Lenten Recollection is essentially a “mini-retreat.” While a full retreat might last several days or a week, a recollection is usually much shorter—typically a few hours or a single day.

The word itself comes from the idea of “re-collecting” yourself. In our busy daily lives, our thoughts, energy, and spirits get scattered. A recollection is a deliberate “pause” button where you gather those scattered pieces back together and refocus them on God.

Since we are currently in the second week of Lent, many parishes or church groups hold these to help people “reset” their spiritual journey before Holy Week arrives.

We are now entering the heart of our Lenten journey. It is a powerful season of grace, yet the resolutions we made on Ash Wednesday can easily fade under the weight of daily life.

Are you feeling spiritually scattered? Running on autopilot? Perhaps a little dry in your prayer?

Like the solitary figure on the winding path in our visual, we are all walking through a “desert” this Lent. A recollection is a moment to step out of the noise, look toward the Horizon, and ensure we are still walking toward the true Light: Jesus Christ.

Why is it different during Lent?

In Lent, a recollection has a very specific “flavor.” It is less about “feeling good” and more about “spiritual inventory.” It’s a time to ask:

  1. How is my prayer life really doing?
  2. Have I been faithful to my Lenten sacrifices?
  3. Where do I need God’s healing and forgiveness right now?

A Simple Analogy

Think of your spiritual life like a smartphone. * Daily Prayer is like your daily charging.

  • A Recollection is like a “Software Update” or a “Hard Reset”—it clears out the background apps (distractions) that are slowing you down and makes sure everything is running the way it was designed to.

We invite your entire family, ministry, or just you, to join us for this dedicated “mini-retreat”—a sacred pause to re-collect your thoughts and renew your heart.

What actually happens during a Lenten Recollection?

A recollection is less about “doing” and more about “being.” It is designed to be a gentle, prayerful encounter. Our time together will include:

  • Spiritual Reflections: Guided talks offering practical wisdom for your Lenten journey.
  • Sacred Silence: Dedicated quiet time to sit in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
  • Examination of Conscience: A guided prayer to help you look honestly at your life before God.

How to Prepare: You need only an open heart. We recommend bringing a journal (if you like to write) and arriving 10-15 minutes early to settle into the silence. Refreshments will be provided.
