Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

To you God entrusted his only Son;

In you Mary placed her trust;

With you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,

Show yourself a father

And guide us in the path of life.

Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,

And defend us from every evil. Amen.

The Devil is the biggest villain in our daily lives. There are many saints we know have faced and defeated the Devil and his diabolical plans bravely such as Archangel Michael, Saint Anthony the Great, etc. Even Jesus has faced the devil’s temptations courageously. Do you know that Saint Joseph is the terror of Demons too?

Saint Joseph was so close to God that he was able to overcome the temptations of the devil and his evil minions. Satan and his companions fail to tempt him into a deep fall because Saint Joseph has patience and love in his personality. He also has a pure heart that weakens the Devil and his minions.

  • Do we find ourselves feeling overcome by the trials of life?
  • Do we look to God with Hope every day?
  • Are we grounded in Jesus so much so that we do not leave any space for the Devil to tell us otherwise?
  • Are we attuned to the voice of God and to trust him enough to do his will for us?

  • Do we know that we are precious to God and covered by the blood of Jesus Christ?

Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, protect us.

Old man, young man

How do we picture the fatherly figure of Jesus? Is he old or young? Saint Joseph is usually portrayed as an older man probably middle aged or elderly who looks after the more youthful Virgin Mary and the young Jesus. And in some depictions, his appearance is more likely of a young man of great strength.

Do we age gracefully and trusting God to be in control, or do we let fear and worries take control of our age and paralyse us to do the best God intended us to be?

  • Do we feel useless as we grow older or do we believe and let God lead, as scripture says “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us”

  • Do we use our talents to our best ability or do we allow age to take control of our gifts?

The letter ‘’J’’

What letter comes to our mind when we think or hear of Joseph? The alphabet ‘’J’’ symbolises the first letter of Saint Joseph’s name

Reflect

  • Do we put the alphabet “J” as in Jesus first in our lives?
  • Do our daily actions resemble Joseph or Jesus in what we do?
  • Are we afraid or ashamed to speak about Jesus to others? Why?

  • Making difficult decisions or being in a difficult situation, do we ask ourselves “what will Jesus do”?

Pair of turtledoves

Image: Feast of the presentation of the Lord from Catholic culture

This icon signifies the remembrance of the sacrifice of the pair of Turtle doves that Mary and Joseph used at the presentation of the temple. It also represents the faithfulness of Joseph and Mary to God.

Jews also used the pair of turtle doves as a sacrifice because they can’t afford a bigger sacrifice and it also points out to us that the Holy Family was not wealthy in silver.

  • Are we faithful and devoted to God?
  • Do we attempt to make little sacrifice to set a quiet time and sit with God?
  • Do we put all materialistic things of the world before God?
  • Do we place wealth as our main priority and approach God as our last resort only if we want or need something
  • Do we share our blessings with those who do not know God?

Besides the Star of David representing the nation of Israel, it also symbolises in the foster father of Jesus. Saint Joseph is characterized as a man of righteousness and he comes from the descendants of King David. He was loyal to the rules and customs of his descendants. • Do we know who we are in Christ?
  • Do we know our family lineage?
  • Is there any member of the family that we are not in contact with or never spoken or forgiven them?
  • Are we walking in righteousness with Christ?

  • How is our prayer life? Is there room for improvement to get to know the Lord better?
  • Do we need to change if we are not walking with Christ?

The slumbering Saint Joseph

Image: Sleeping Saint Joseph of the Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph in Anonas, Quezon City

This illustration shows that when Joseph was in his slumber, God talks to him through the voice of an angel in his dream. Saint Joseph was a hardworking man and he was able to sense and follow God’s will even when he was in a deep sleep.

  • Do we have a good sleep or a restless sleep because of anxieties, depression, stress or any forms of nightmare that disturbs us badly?
  • Do we spend time with God in silence, to hear and listen to his voice?
  • What do we do when we are not able to sleep?

  • Do we trust God enough to give him all our worries and fears in exchange for his peace which surpasses all understanding?
  • Do we know of anyone who is struggling to have a sound sleep but suffering from anxieties? How can we help them?

The flowering rod

Images: Saint Joseph by N. Musio

When Joseph selected Mary to become his wife, he did not choose her purposely. He was selected by God and planned for him with good will to look after the Holy Family. It symbolises the selection of Joseph by God to care and protect the Holy family.

This icon also recalls the image of the flowering staff of Aaron that shows he has been chosen by God from the book of Numbers.

When we are chosen to take responsibility to take care of our family, do we complain or grumble?

  • Do we find them a burden and blame God for giving us such huge responsibilities in taking care of them?
  • Do we face difficulty in communicating with our families and friends and how can we make the relationship better?

  • Are we taking the trouble besides our busy schedule to spend time with our love ones?
  • Are we a source of pillar relying totally on God’s strength like Saint Joseph to be there for our family or loved ones?

Saint Joseph with the lilies

Images: St. Joseph with baby Jesus and lilies by catholictradition.org

The white fresh lilies represent the purity and loyalty of Saint Joseph to God. He faced the toughest challenge of taking care of his Holy Family which God tells him to do. He obeys God faithfully. Saint Joseph was a man of righteousness while looking after his spouse, Mary.

Regardless of his marriage to Mary, Joseph and the Virgin Mary are chaste in their relationship.

  • How do we treat our spouse? Can we do better?
  • Do we invite Jesus to be the centre of our family?
